Well, there’s no denying it, winter can be a real drag when you’re in the depths of it. But there are ways you can embrace the long winters at home and reframe the way you feel about it. By making your home feel like a cosy sanctuary and battening down the hatches against the cold you can make time spent with family an enjoyable experience. Our living room is above our garage, so it’s naturally a little colder than the rest of the house.
A cosy, tactile update for our minimal living room
If like me you have wood floors, nothing warms up planks better than a beautiful quality wool rug. In our minimal living room, I’ve chosen to break up the darker tones with a cream and brown melange Nunja rug from Urbanara. Handwoven from soft and durable wool, its the subtle depth and texture reminds me of classic boucle upholstery which you’ll have recently seen in my DIY cushion.
It’s lovely to shuffle over to the sofa in the mornings with my coffee and feel the warmth. I’m determined not to let the dark days bring down the mood!
As a brand, Urbanara is known for its strict focus on sustainable and ethical design. By supporting the Care and Fair initiative which work in carpet making communities across Nepal, India and Pakistan, they contribute to breaking the cycle of child labour to provide education and healthcare. Care and Fair also work to ensure workers receive a decent living wage, better conditions and support within the community. So I’m happy to have a beautifully made handwoven wool rug made by artisans who are well respected.

A warm and inviting Nordic dining room
I haven’t always been a fan of rugs in the dining room, in part I think because it was too much to maintain with a young child and frankly, who has the time? But now I don’t have that to think about anymore with a teenager in the house. I’ve been longing for a touch of warmth underfoot during meal times and the Patan flat weave rug won out.
Made in India, the wool is un-dyed and chemical-free meaning that the natural beauty of the wool comes through in the weave. It’s finished with a simple edging and, most importantly, you can flip it over to lessen the wear and tear over time. A flat-woven rug is the best option if you’re looking to add one to zone your dining table as it’s much easier to vacuum and dirt won’t get stuck in the pile.
I love how the natural creams in the wool set off the black dining table. It looks crisp and contemporary but oh-so warm and inviting. Don’t you think?
