Flexible dining space with extra seating at hand

A multi-purpose dining space is one of the things I’m looking for in our new home. I would like a space that is easy to transform. I would like to do more entertaining and for Magnus to be able to use the space creatively, whether it be baking, homework or painting. Looking at these beautiful pictures by Anders Bergstedt, I feel like taking up painting too.

I don’t want our dining table to be restricted to just eating, but more of a social space. In France, we used to have a huge dining table and we used to sit there a lot of the time. Magnus used to spend hours painting and making things with plasticine.

I mentioned entertaining. In a sociable kitchen/dining room extra seating is a must, but you don’t necessarily want to clutter up your space with lots of chairs if you don’t need them on a daily basis. I find stackable chairs really handy as you can stack them up in a cupboard or in the garage when they’re not in use. Check out Atlantic Shopping and their chair collection.

Another favourite is a bench. A wooden bench can act as storage for books and plants and be used as seating when needed. This is exactly what happens to our wooden bench when we have people round. I find it works really well and I’m currently using our wooden bench for my plants. I’ve got it in our big kitchen window where they’re really enjoying all the natural light.

If you’ve been reading my blog for a while you’ll know that flexible solutions and change is a huge part of who I am. I enjoy changing things and don’t think that’s something that will change when we move into a new home, but never say never.

If you would like to read more I’ve taken part in an article on Designing a Home for the whole family. Check it out here. You can find tips from other bloggers too and a competition.
