Home Tour | Period Home with Grey Living Room and a Cosy Corner Sofa

Step inside this beautiful turn-of-the-century Swedish apartment. This home has a gorgeous calming grey living room. The mid-grey painted walls have been picked out with contrasting white woodwork. Built in 1904, this home has all the hallmarks of its time; ornate stucco on the ceilings, decorative panelled doors and window frames. It’s exactly what you’d want from a typical Scandinavian apartment.

A cosy grey corner sofa shows off how spacious this room is. The sofa has been pulled away from the walls and is facing towards the original tiled wood burner in the corner. We naturally place sofas up against a wall, but as we can see here, it’s not always the best idea. A natural rattan rug and light oak coffee table complement the light parquet wood floors, warming up the room and balancing out the grey tones. A scattering of velvet cushions and cosy tactile textiles in deep blues and charcoal add a little extra depth to the colour palette. I like that they haven’t filled this room with too much furniture, rather letting the original features and carefully considered furniture show off the space and light. I think the sofa in this home could also easily be used as a Sofa bed NZ . It looks so cosy.

I love how the owners have used grey as a hero colour throughout this home, did you notice? Moving into the kitchen, the units have been painted a soft grey, looking out towards double windows and a simple black and oak dining table. Two opaque glass pendant lights zone the dining space with a mix of black bentwood chairs and a bench for informal seating.

The two bedrooms actually mirror the décor – the first in a deep grey with green linen bedding and accessories, the second bedroom with soothing green walls and a grey rug at the foot of the bed. Clever, don’t you think?

When it comes to this home, the word “lagom” comes to mind. “Just enough”, as they would say in Sweden.
